  1.      Eventually, both war-weary sides negotiated the Treaty of Ghent in 1814, ending the war the following year. The war had ended American economic dependence on Britain. The nation could focus now on growth. In the Pacific northwest the first permanent settlement was started by John Jacob Aster's fur business, and the first steamboat traveled the great Mississippi river. It was a time of peace and prosperity.
